In the dynamic landscape of independent watchmaking, the emergence of accessible sibling brands has been a notable trend, offering a bridge for enthusiasts to experience the design ethos of high-end ateliers without the prohibitive price tag. Among these, GRØNE, founded by brothers Bart and Tim Grönefeld, stands out as a brand conceived with a clear purpose: to make their distinctive design language and passion for horology available to a wider audience.

Introduced in the fall of 2024, GRØNE was established to cater to friends and family who admired the Grönefeld brand's largely handmade luxury watches but found them financially out of reach. This vision laid the groundwork for a brand that, while distinct, would carry the unmistakable DNA of its prestigious elder sibling, all while embracing its roots in Oldenzaal, Netherlands.
The Genesis: Early GRØNE and the Manueel One Spirit
The initial GRØNE releases, including models like the Manueel One, Sjef's One, Tim & Bart's One, and the Moment Meter, established the brand's foundational principles. These early pieces were characterized by a commitment to manual winding movements, a choice that Bart and Tim Grönefeld believe fosters a more personal connection between the wearer and the watch. This daily ritual of winding encourages interaction, allowing the owner to feel the movement come to life and appreciate the craftsmanship involved. This philosophy has remained a cornerstone of the GRØNE identity, emphasizing the tactile experience of traditional watchmaking.

From a design perspective, these watches began the process of translating Grönefeld's intricate aesthetic into a more streamlined, yet equally compelling, form. They showcased the brothers' unique design sensibilities, focusing on clear legibility, thoughtful dial layouts, and a refined case architecture that hinted at the sophistication of their haute horlogerie creations. The "Oldenzaal" designation, prominently featured, served not just as a geographical marker but as an emblem of their Dutch heritage and the personal touch infused into every GRØNE timepiece.
Refinement and Identity: The GRØNE Design Language

GRØNE's design language is a careful balance of familiarity and innovation. It aims to capture the essence of Grönefeld's aesthetic cues while forging an identity that is both accessible and expressive. The brand's commitment to quality is evident in its choice of movements and finishing, even at a more approachable price point. The goal has always been to deliver exceptional value and an independent watchmaking spirit to the next generation of collectors.
The "Oldenzaal" identity is more than just a name; it's a narrative. It speaks to the Grönefeld brothers' roots and their desire to infuse their personal character and Dutch heritage into the GRØNE brand. This is reflected in subtle design elements and the overall ethos of creating watches that are both serious in their horological intent and playful in their execution, mirroring the personalities of Bart and Tim themselves.
The Horologium: A New Pinnacle of GRØNE's Vision

The introduction of the Horologium marks a significant evolution for GRØNE, representing what the brand describes as the third generation of its Oldenzaal cases. This new three-hander, available in "Quirky" and "Classic" variants, showcases a refined design that, according to the brand, captures the Grönefeld aesthetic even more effectively than previous efforts. As we've previously highlighted in our coverage, the Horologium is a testament to GRØNE's maturing vision.

Both Horologium variants feature diamond-cut and polished applied hour markers, a multilayer dial construction, and a bowled subsidiary seconds display at 6 o'clock. The "Something Quirky" variant is a bold expression of Dutch heritage, blending vivid orange and baby blue elements, complemented by heat-blued hands. It even includes a playful inscription on the inside of the sapphire crystal: "Zoals het klokje thuis tikt, tikt het nergens" ("Home sweet home"). In contrast, the "Something Classic" variant offers a more subdued elegance with a salmon dial featuring a subtle sunray treatment, flame-blued steel hands, and a raised small-seconds plateau with multiple finishing elements.
Crucially, the Horologium is the first time-only GRØNE piece to feature a display caseback, allowing an uninterrupted view of its manually wound La Joux-Perret caliber. This movement boasts a surprising amount of custom finishing, including Côtes de Genève, sunburst snailing, sandblasted surfaces, heat-blued screws, mirror-polishing, and machine anglage. A distinctive orange gasket on the caseback crystal further reinforces the brand's "Dutch" touch.

The case itself, measuring 39mm in diameter and 10mm thick, has undergone subtle refinements. The caseband now features a satin-brushed finish, designed to create an illusion of thinness, while polished bezels and caseback provide striking contrast. The lugs have been carefully reshaped with a more pronounced downturned angle, enhancing wearability across various wrist sizes. This attention to detail in both aesthetics and comfort underscores GRØNE's commitment to delivering a high-quality product.
The Enduring Purpose of Accessibility
The Horologium, priced at €2,390 (excluding VAT) and limited to 188 pieces per variant, continues GRØNE's mission of bringing exceptional value and the spirit of independent watchmaking to a broader audience. It serves as a testament to Bart and Tim Grönefeld's dedication to their craft, offering a timepiece that embodies their design philosophy and personal character. By making such finely finished mechanical watches more accessible, GRØNE not only expands its own reach but also cultivates a new generation of watch enthusiasts who can appreciate the intricacies and artistry of traditional horology. The Horologium is available for order beginning August 13, with deliveries expected from mid-September onwards.
